Your character can’t jump over gaps or even minor obstructions, so your navigation of each of the game’s levels must be carried out by employing this mechanic, and it makes for some really challenging, extremely fun moments.Īll manner of obstructions are littered across every section of every level.

Flip while up there, and you’ll be sent back to the floor. If you’re walking across the ground, hitting the spacebar or up/down on the directional keys will launch you into the air, and you’ll begin walking across the ceiling. Rather than allowing your character to jump freely like in other side-scrolling platformers, VVVVVV only lets you flip up and down. The implementation of a meaningful plot to drive the game forward contrasts nicely with the old-school look and design of the game, making VVVVVV more than just a story-free retro-style side-scroller. The story is fairly simple, but there are bits of dialogue between characters every time you rescue them. As Captain Viridian, it is your job to explore the dimension and seek out every missing member of the crew. They teleport their 8-bit selves out of the ship, but each of the crew members ends up on different parts of an alternate dimension. VVVVVV Story (4 out of 5)Īn intergalactic team of six explorers is forced to evacuate their ship due to a strange interference in the system. Developed by Terry Cavanagh, who’s responsible for plenty of other solid indie games, VVVVVV offers an incredibly stylish, retro-themed adventure across space that’s sure to challenge you, frustrate you, and have you begging for more by the end of your adventure.

VVVVVV manages to do both, and it does so practically flawlessly. Plenty of indie games out there deliver unique ideas or offer that much-needed throwback to a classic era in gaming. Its the fact that it's not emulating 8-bit NES pixel art or a much fuller SNES style color palette that makes it stand out.Īlso, Veni Vidi Vici is incredibly frustrating, but it's going to be so awesome when I finally get that damned thing.A Meaningfully Blissful Ride Through Space - VVVVVV Review VVVVVV is a bit unique in that it's emulating pixel art of a very specific (and arguably under represented) era of computing. It's an intentional and loving recreation of low-fi graphics and 16 color palettes of the late 80's. It's not a bad choice in and of itself, but it is a little overplayed.īut it's sort of unfair to simply say "up to par" as if this isn't a conscious choice on Terry Cavanagh's part, especially when combined with the simplicity of the mechanics and SoulEye's work on the music. It's the result of the necessity for low-fidelity graphics when working with one-to-four man teams combined with a bit of the ironic hipster thing and a lot of nostalgia for old titles and days that were. There's a legitimate argument to be made that the faux-retro aesthetic plagues indie games in general.
